Hans Lissmann , also Hans Lißmann , (born September 19, 1885 in Hamburg , † May 26, 1964 in Leipzig ) was a German opera singer ( tenor ) and singing teacher.

Life

Lissman was the son of the bass baritone Friedrich Heinrich Lissmann (1847-1894) and the soprano Anna Marie Lissmann-Gutzschbach (1847-1928). His sister Eva-Katharina Lissmann (1883 – after 1917) was also a concert singer.

He studied orchestral conducting at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Leipzig and at the Royal Conservatory for Music and Theater in Dresden , including with Arthur Nikisch , and then worked as a conductor at various German theaters. He received his singing training from Raimund von Zur Mühlen in London and from Ernesto Colli in Milan .

In 1913 he returned to Germany. After a brief engagement at the Hamburg Volksoper , he was the first lyric tenor at the Leipzig Opera from 1914 to 1933 . There he sang over 100 roles, including in the 1919 world premiere of the opera Revolutionshochzeit by Eugen d'Albert and in 1927 in the world premiere of the opera Clavigo by Max Ettinger . He gave successful guest appearances, such as the Fenton in Verdi's Falstaff under Arturo Toscanini in Rome , the Belmonte in The Abduction from the Seraglio under Sir Thomas Beecham in London and at leading German theaters. Max von Schillings chose him as the singer for the world premiere of his opera Mona Lisa in Stuttgart .

In September 1933 he gave his acclaimed farewell performance as Alfredo in the opera La traviata in Leipzig .

At the same time, Lissmann was a highly respected concert and lied singer. In addition to his own concerts in Leipzig, he regularly sang the role of the evangelist in the performances of Bach's St. Matthew Passion and Christmas Oratorio under Thomas Cantor Karl Straube . In addition to Wolfgang Rosenthal (bass-baritone), Ilse Helling-Rosenthal (soprano) and Marta Adam (alto), he was a tenor in the Rosenthal Quartet .

In addition, he was also active as a composer of songs and short operas as well as the opera Woe to the one who lies! based on Franz Grillparzer 's comedy of the same name .

Between 1923 and 1954, Hans Lissmann was professor for singing at the Leipzig Conservatory. Reiner Suss and Rolf Apreck were among his students .

Since 1921 he was a member of the Leipzig Freemason Lodge Minerva to the three palms . He was married to Erika Auenmüller (1908–1973). The marriage had several children.
