Reiner Süß (born February 2, 1930 in Chemnitz , † January 29, 2015 in Friedland (Mecklenburg) ) was a German chamber singer ( bass ), entertainer and politician ( SPD ).

Life

Süß attended the Thomas School in Leipzig and studied singing with Hans Lissmann , among others . He was a member of the Leipzig St. Thomas Choir . From 1953, Suss was committed to the Leipzig Radio Choir . Suss made his stage debut in 1956 in Bernburg as Njegus in the Merry Widow . In the following year, Suss was engaged at the State Theater in Halle . Since 1959 he was a member of the German State Opera in the role of bass buffo .

In 1962 he received the title of chamber singer . Important roles were the ox on Lerchenau in the Rosenkavalier , Bartolo in the barber of Seville and Falstaff . Süß also appeared in productions of contemporary operas, for example in the title role of Paul Dessau's Puntila and as Kowaljow in Shostakovich's opera The Nose . In 1967 he was awarded the GDR National Prize. He celebrated great success at the Vienna State Opera and the Paris Opera . He became known to a wide audience as the presenter of the GDR television program Da geht Musike drin , which was broadcast from 1968 to 1985.

In 1998, Süß said goodbye to the big opera houses. Since then he has taken on various engagements on smaller stages. For example, in 2003/2004 he appeared in the Anhaltisches Theater Dessau as Ollendorf in the begging student . He took on further appearances in Eisenhüttenstadt , Putbus and other places in the new federal states “out of passion”.

Suss published a large number of records and CDs with opera arias and songs interpreted by him.

Since May 1990 he was a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany. He became a member of the East Berlin City Council in May 1990 and was a member of the Berlin House of Representatives from 1991 to 1995 .

Reiner Suess was married to Renate Suess since 1955. The son Dario Süß , who is also an opera singer, and the daughter Patricia Schwab, who works as a flautist, come from the relationship . Since 1960, Süß had his residence in Berlin-Mahlsdorf . Suss died four days before his 85th birthday in a nursing home in Friedland.
