The IIHF European Champions Cup in 2005 the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF was the first edition of the successor to the European Hockey League applicable competition . He was from 13 to 16 January 2005 at the Russian St. Petersburg in the Ice Arena discharged.

Representatives from the six best European nations according to the 2004 IIHF world rankings were qualified for the IIHF European Champions Cup . The participating teams came from Sweden, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Russia, Finland and Germany. Teams from Switzerland and Austria had not qualified due to the poor performance of the national team. The champions and other invited teams from the other European leagues were able to participate in the IIHF Continental Cup .

A total of 28,100 spectators attended the games.

Group stage

In the preliminary round three teams played in two groups for the finals.

Group A

In Group A, the Finnish representative Kärpät Oulu prevailed against the competitors HC Hame Zlín from the Czech Republic and the Frankfurt Lions from Germany. They won both games with a difference of three goals.

Group B

Group B saw the Russian representative HK Awangard Omsk and the Czech NHL player Jaromír Jágr confidently reach the final. Both HC Dukla Trenčín from Slovakia and HV 71 Jönköping from Sweden had no chance in their 1: 6 or 0: 9 defeats.

final

In a hard-fought final, the two group winners from Oulu and Omsk met, which Omsk won 2-1 in extra time and thus won the first edition of the competition. The winning goal was scored by the Czech Jaromír Jágr , who had been committed to the start of the season due to the lockout of the NHL season .

Omsk secured the Silver Stone Trophy by winning a European Cup for the first time .
