Peter Ratchuk (born September 10, 1977 in Buffalo , New York ) is a former American ice hockey player and current scout for the NHL team, the Winnipeg Jets .
Player career
Peter Ratchuk grew up in Buffalo, America. There he went through various youth teams and leagues. In 1996, the talented defender graduated from Shattuck-St Mary's School in Faribault , Minnesota and was selected 25th in the first round by the Colorado Avalanche in the NHL Entry Draft . However, he did not sign a contract there and became a free agent two years later . In the meantime, the American played for Bowling Green State University in the NCAA and the Hull Olympiques in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . Especially in his junior season at the Hull Olympiques, Ratchuk knew how to convince and scored a total of 63 points (26 goals, 37 assists) in 71 games.
On June 17, 1998, Ratchuk signed a contract with the Florida Panthers . But the breakthrough in the NHL was denied to the young player. The Panthers decided to give the defender to the farm team, the Beast of New Haven , in the American Hockey League . From there, his path led him to the Louisville Panthers in the following two seasons . There the offensive defender scored more regularly, so that he was allowed to play eight more missions for the Florida Panthers in the 2000/01 season . From 2001 to 2003 Ratchuck tried in the NHL with the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Buffalo Sabers , but again he only played in the farm team for the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins and the Rochester Americans in the American Hockey League.
In 2003 the American decided to move to Europe. His path led him to the Frankfurt Lions , for whom he scored 22 goals and 27 assists in 67 games in his first season and surprisingly became German champions with the Lions . The defender, who finally moved to Adler Mannheim in 2005, was also convincing in the following season .
With the self-confidence he had acquired in Germany, the American decided in 2006 to move to his home country again and signed a contract with the Minnesota Wild . But even in the 2006/07 season he only played for various farm teams in the American Hockey League. For this reason, Ratchuk returned to Germany the next year, where he played for the DEG Metro Stars between 2007 and 2009 . For the 2009/10 season he moved within the league to the Hamburg Freezers and one season later to the EC KAC . After Mike Siklenka was signed, his contract was terminated in January 2011.
At the end of January 2011, Ratchuk moved to the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers , where he signed a contract until the end of the season. Since the 2011/12 season Ratchuk is as a scout for the NHL team Winnipeg Jets operates.
