NHL Entry Draft
 <1995 1997>

The NHL Entry Draft in 1996 was held on 22 June 1996 at the Kiel Center in St. Louis in the US state of Missouri instead. In the 34th edition of the NHL Entry Draft , the teams of the National Hockey League (NHL) selected a total of 241 players in nine rounds. Canadian defender Chris Phillips was selected by the Ottawa Senators as the first overall draft pick . Andrei Sjusin for the San Jose Sharks and Jean-Pierre Dumont for the New York Islanders followed in second and third .

The 1996 draft produced, among others, Ruslan Salej , Dainius Zubrus , Marco Sturm , Daniel Brière , Matt Cullen , Mathieu Garon , Zdeno Chára , Mark Parrish , Michal Rozsíval , Pavel Kubina and Tomáš Kaberle as a below-average vintage . No actor has yet been considered in the Hockey Hall of Fame . In addition, the 241 picks included seven additional voting rights which, under the recently passed Collective Bargaining Agreement , were given to teams that had lost certain players through the Free Agency in the summer of 1995.

Draft order

lottery

No. team chance
1. Ottawa Senators 30.0%
2. San Jose Sharks 21.0%
3. New York Islanders 15.1%
4th Los Angeles Kings 10.9%
5. Dallas Stars 8.0%
No. team chance
6th Edmonton Oilers 5.9%
7th Buffalo Sabers 4.2%
8th. Hartford Whalers 2.8%
9. Mighty Ducks of Anaheim 1.6%
10. New Jersey Devils 0.5%

The draft lottery introduced in the previous year was continued with the same modalities. The Ottawa Senators won this as the weakest team of the past 1995/96 season , so no change in the order came about. This corresponded to the reversed final table of the previous season, but it was only the turn of all teams that had missed the playoffs. This was followed by all playoff teams, also according to their score and not influenced by the success in the post-season .

review

Matt Cullen , best scorer this year

Except for Zdeno Chára , all players of this year have ended their NHL careers, so that the 1996 draft is the oldest with an active NHL professional. The tables show the five best players in the categories of games, goals, assists and scorer points as well as the three goalkeepers with the most wins in the NHL. Chára's stats are correct at the end of the 2018/19 season, so he has already surpassed Cullen in terms of games played. In addition, 99 of the 241 selected players (approx. 41%) have played at least one NHL game.

Abbreviations: Sp = games, T = goals, V = assists , Pkt = scorer points , S = wins; Fat: best value
