Career
Wesley began his career with the Portland Winter Hawks in the Western Hockey League . In the 1987 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected after strong performance in the junior league by the Boston Bruins in the first round as third overall.
In the 1987/88 season he immediately made the breakthrough in the NHL. With 37 points he was elected to the NHL All-Rookie Team and he reached the final series of the Stanley Cup with the Bruins . There, however, the team was subject to the Edmonton Oilers . Two years later they faced the Oilers again in the finals and lost again. He developed into one of the NHL's most solid defenders. After seven seasons with the Bruins, he moved to the Hartford Whalers in the summer of 1994 . The Bruins received three first-round draft picks with which they selected Kyle McLaren in 1995 , Johnathan Aitken in 1996 and Sergei Samsonow in 1997 .
In Hartford, too, he quickly became the backbone of the defensive. For the 1997/98 season he moved with the team to Carolina. At the Carolina Hurricanes he was one of the pillars and reached the Stanley Cup final with the team at the end of the 2001/02 season . For the third time in his career he lost in the final series, this time against the Detroit Red Wings . When his contract expired the following season, he was given to the Toronto Maple Leafs . He played only seven games for the Leafs in the regular season and five more in the playoffs. In the summer he signed again as a free agent with the Hurricanes. He was also there when the team finally won the Stanley Cup in the 2005/06 season . At the end of the 2007/08 season , he ended his 20-year NHL career at the age of 39 and took over a position in the executive suite of the Carolina Hurricanes the following season.
The Hurricanes, the player's shirt number 2 in 2009 imprisoned and has since given to no other player more, Wesley worked until the summer of 2018, before the coaching staff of the St. Louis Blues changed.
