NHL Entry Draft
|
The 1987 NHL Entry Draft took place on June 13, 1987 at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit , Michigan . In the 25th edition of the NHL Entry Draft , the teams of the National Hockey League (NHL) selected a total of 252 players in twelve rounds. The Canadian center Pierre Turgeon was selected by the Buffalo Sabers as the first overall draft pick . Brendan Shanahan for the New Jersey Devils and Glen Wesley for the Boston Bruins followed in second and third . The order of the draft resulted from the reversed final table of the past 1986/87 season , with the playoff teams after the teams that had missed the playoffs.
The 1987 Entry Draft was the first of its kind to be held in the United States. At the same time, the number of elected Americans rose significantly (from almost 60 in the previous year to 100), although only Canadians were considered in the first round. These included the later Hall of Fame members Brendan Shanahan and Joe Sakic as well as Luke Richardson and Andrew Cassels , while later with John LeClair , Jeff Hackett , Éric Desjardins , Mathieu Schneider , Ted Donato , Shawn McEachern , Guy Hebert and Theoren Fleury other well-known players followed.
