Ricard Lars Persson (born August 24, 1969 in Östersund ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player who was active from 1995 to 2002 for the New Jersey Devils , St. Louis Blues and Ottawa Senators in the National Hockey League . Since July 2010 he has worked as a scout for the Minnesota Wild .
Career
Persson began his career in 1984 with Östersunds IK in the second highest Swedish league. His good performance led to the fact that he was signed by Leksands IF from the Elitserien three years later . In the 1987 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in the second round at a total of 23rd position by the New Jersey Devils . He won the Swedish championship in the Elitserien with Malmö IF in the 1993/94 season . In 1995 he got a contract with the New Jersey Devils, but in the following years Persson played mostly for their farm team , the Albany River Rats , in the American Hockey League . In November 1996 he was bartered to the St. Louis Blues and the defender received not only stakes for the Blues in the NHL but also Ice Age with the Worcester IceCats in the AHL. In the 1999/2000 season he won the Presidents' Trophy with the Blues as the best point team of the season, before the team failed in the first round of the playoffs in seven encounters at the San Jose Sharks . In July 2000 he signed a contract with the Ottawa Senators as a free agent . During the 2000/01 season , Persson missed several months of the regular season due to an ankle injury.
In August 2002 the Swedish defender was signed by the Eisbären Berlin . The then 32-year-old received a one-year contract. In the 2004/05 season he won the German championship in the German Ice Hockey League with the Eisbären . In April 2005 he signed a three-year contract with EC KAC with an exit clause after two years. With his Japanese club Ōji Ice Hockey Team , he prevailed 3-2 in the third play-off final against last year's champions Nippon Paper Cranes in March 2008 .
In the summer of 2009 he signed a contract for one year with SG Cortina in the Italian A1 series . In July 2010, he ended his playing career and became a scout with the Minnesota Wild .
International
For Sweden Persson took part in the Ice Hockey World Championship 2000 , in which he remained pointless in seven games and received six penalty minutes. During his junior years he represented his home country at the U18 European Championship in 1987 and won the gold medal with the Swedish selection. Persson also represented the Swedish junior team at the Junior World Championships in 1988 and 1989 . In the latter tournament, he contributed nine scorer points to the silver medal win and was then named the best defender of the tournament and voted into the All-Star team.
