Malmö Redhawks (former names: Malmö IF , MIF , MIF Redhawks ) is a Swedish ice hockey club from the city of Malmö . The team was two Swedish champions and has been playing in the first-class Svenska Hockeyligan again since 2015 .

history

Slow ascent

Initially there was an ice hockey section at the Malmö FF club . The club chairman in the 1970s, Erik Persson, considered this section to be too costly and so the section was spun off on February 28, 1972 and the Malmö IF association was founded. Until 1983, the team played in the second division. After that you were in the third division from time to time and in 1988, after a successful phase, you even had the opportunity to move up to the highest division ( Elitserien ). However, the qualifying games were lost.

Percy Nilsson, who was elected spokesman for the club in 1984, has now lived up to his nickname “Master Builder” ( byggmästare ) and has brought some world-class players to the club. After the 1989/90 season there were three qualifying games for the highest league against MoDo Hockey , all of which were won.

Top division

In the first year in the Elitserien, Malmö IF could reach the play-off round , but in the quarterfinals they were eliminated by Luleå HF . In the 1991/92 season, the club made it to the finals. It was played in the best of five mode , and after two won and two lost games against Djurgårdens IF , the play-off took place in Malmö. In front of a record crowd of 5,940 spectators, they won this game and were thus Swedish champions for the first time. The series of successes could be continued in the European Cup , so that Malmö IF after the final match against HK Dynamo Moscow was also the winner of this competition.

In the following year, Malmö IF only made it to the semi-finals in the Elitserien, but one year later they celebrated the next championship title after defeating MoDo Hockey, which was already in the lead with two victories, with three consecutive victories.

In the 1994/95 season, the club was able to strengthen itself with several NHL stars, as there was a player strike . This time, however, the team loses the finals after a promising start, which also leads to the separation from the current coach. There followed a time in which the club was able to reach the final round, but failed there in the quarter or semi-finals due to a stronger opponent. In the 1997/98 season it was not even enough for the play-off round after various differences of opinion in the team. A year later, the team showed fighting spirit and played their way to the semi-finals. There MoDo Hockey was the opponent again. In the end, it was only enough to win and the dream of the final was over.

In the following two years they failed in the semi-finals and in 2002 it was over after the first play-off games. After a mediocre season in 2002/03, economic difficulties arise a year later. The club's management had signed a contract with a television station ( TV4 Plus ) that the team should take part in a documentary film series. This series did not come about for financial reasons, which also affected the club. The athletic performance subsided, so that one was forced to qualifying games for staying in the Elitserien. This time the team was able to save themselves, but after the 2004/05 season the club was relegated with a similar constellation and less successful qualifying games.

Descent into the Allsvenskan

The games in the ice hockey Allsvenskan of the 2005/06 season were mostly successful, and so there was a chance for immediate resurgence, which was also used. But already a year later Malmö failed because of relegation in the Kvalserien, so that the Redhawks relegated again to the Allsvenskan. At the end of the 2007/08 season they reached the Kvalserien for promotion, but failed at Rögle BK and Brynäs IF . Therefore Malmö belongs to the second division in the season 2008/09.

Home ground

The former Redhawks' venue: the Isstadion
The Malmö Arena

Malmö IF has been using the 5,804-seat Malmö Isstadion for its home games since 1970 . In January 2007 the construction of a new arena for the Redhawks in the district of Hyllievång began, which was finally opened in November 2008. The “ Malmö Arena ” has a capacity of around 12,500 spectators for ice hockey games and was inaugurated by the Redhawks on November 12, 2008 in their home game against Leksands IF .
