Jani Petteri Hurme (born January 7, 1975 in Turku ) is a Finnish ice hockey goalkeeper who was last under contract with Ilves Tampere in the SM-liiga .

Career

Jani Hurme began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of TPS Turku , with whose U20 juniors he was champion in the corresponding age group in 1993. In the following years, the goalkeeper was able to assert himself in the professional team of TPS and became runner-up with his team in 1994 and 1997 and won the European Hockey League with TPS in the 1996/97 season , at whose final tournament he was particularly convincing in whose all-star team he was elected. The Finn, who from 1993 to 1996 also collected game practice in the second-class I divisioona, received several awards during his time at TPS. In the 1995/96 season he received the Jarmo Wasama commemorative trophy as the best rookie in the SM liiga and in the following year both the Lasse Oksanen trophy as the best player in the main round and the Urpo Ylönen trophy as the best goalkeeper .

In the 1997 NHL Entry Draft , Hurme was selected in the third round as the 58th player in total by the Ottawa Senators , but came in the following two years initially only in the International Hockey League for the Detroit Vipers , Indianapolis Ice and Cincinnati Cyclones on the ice. Although he made his debut in the National Hockey League for Ottawa in the 1999/2000 season , but only came to a single use and spent the entire remaining season with their IHL farm team Grand Rapids Griffins . He was also able to convince there and was appointed to the All-Star Team. From 2000 to 2003, the Finn was regularly used in the NHL - initially still for Ottawa and in the 2002/03 season for the Florida Panthers - but never played in more than a third of the games. On October 3, 2003, he was given a four-round suffrage for the NHL Entry Draft 2004 to the Atlanta Thrashers , but did not complete a single mandatory ice hockey game in the following two years due to injury and illness.

In the 2005/06 season Hurme returned to the ice and played for the Chicago Wolves and Portland Pirates in the American Hockey League , and the Columbia Inferno in the ECHL . For the following season , the Olympic participant from 2002 received a contract with his hometown club TPS Turku, where he was able to build on his old form right away and had a catch rate of over 91 percent in both the main round and the playoffs . In the summer of 2007, the Finn joined the Swedish second division team Malmö Redhawks from HockeyAllsvenskan . He left this after two and a half years and was obliged by the Finnish SM-liiga club Ilves Tampere during the 2009/10 season .

For Finland , Hurme took part in the 1997 and 2003 World Championships and the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City . Furthermore, he was in his country's squad for the Euro Hockey Tour in 2007 .
