During the NHL Entry Draft 1994 was selected in a total of 286th place by the New York Rangers . However, he stayed with the Redhawks until 1999, where he established himself as a reliable defender.

In return, the Rangers received Eric Lindros . During the lockout in the 2004/05 NHL season , he went on the ice for HC Ambrì-Piotta in the Swiss National League A.

After four years in Philadelphia, Johnsson signed on July 1, 2006 a four-year contract with the Minnesota Wild . Shortly before the end of the trade deadline , he was transferred to the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2009-10 season . With these he won the Stanley Cup for the first time in his career at the end of the season . However, a concussion prevented him from playing the last 14 regular season games and the entire playoffs, which is why his name was not engraved on the trophy. Due to persistent symptoms of dizziness, he ended his career in the summer of 2010.
