During the NHL Entry Draft 1994 was selected in a total of 286th place by the New York Rangers . However, he stayed with the Redhawks until 1999, where he established himself as a reliable defender.

In return, the Rangers received Eric Lindros . During the lockout in the 2004/05 NHL season , he went on the ice for HC Ambrì-Piotta in the Swiss National League A.
After four years in Philadelphia, Johnsson signed on July 1, 2006 a four-year contract with the Minnesota Wild . Shortly before the end of the trade deadline , he was transferred to the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2009-10 season . With these he won the Stanley Cup for the first time in his career at the end of the season .
