Career

The 1.83 m tall center began his career on the Lake Superior State University team in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association before he was selected in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft as 149th in the eighth round of the Devils.

After graduating from college, the right-shooter played for the Utica Devils , a New Jersey farm team in the American Hockey League . When he made his NHL debut for the New Jersey Devils during the 1991/92 season , he was the first domestic player who had ever played for the team from East Rutherford in the highest American professional league. Dowd also spent most of the following three seasons in the AHL, first in Utaca, then later with the Albany River Rats , the New Jersey Devils' new farm team. After good performances there, the American was part of the Devils' regular team for the next season , but due to the lockout this season and a shoulder injury, Dowd only played 21 games for New Jersey, eleven of them in the play-offs , in which he had two Goals and an assist to the Devils' first Stanley Cup win.

On December 19 of the same year, Jim Dowd was finally transferred to the Hartford Whalers together with a second round pick for the 1997 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for Jocelyn Lemieux and a 1998 draft pick . On the same day, however, the Whalers exchanged the right-handed shooter with František Kučera for Jeff Brown with the Vancouver Canucks . In Vancouver, however, Dowd completed only 38 games, for the 1996/97 season he moved to the New York Islanders . But during his time in New York, Jim Dowd only played three NHL games, the rest of the time he spent in the IHL farm team of the Islanders, the Utah Grizzlies , and with the Saint John Flames in the AHL. On July 10, 1997, the striker finally signed a free agent contract with the Calgary Flames .

On June 27, 1998, the Flames transferred Dowd to the Nashville Predators , but for the second time in his career the player was transferred without having played a game, so that he was on the payroll of the Edmonton Oilers at the beginning of the 1998/99 season . In his first season in Canada, Dowd only played one NHL game and spent the rest of the time with the Hamilton Bulldogs in the American Hockey League. After a second season with more frequent NHL appearances, Dowd was selected in the 2000 NHL Expansion Draft by the newly formed Minnesota Wild , for which he was on the ice for four years. After a year with the Montréal Canadiens Dowd signed a contract with the Hamburg Freezers during the 2004/05 lockout season , after a year in the DEL he returned to the United States to begin a commitment with the Chicago Blackhawks .

After a few games with the Colorado Avalanche , Jim Dowd returned to the New Jersey Devils on November 2, 2006, for him Dan LaCouture was transferred to Colorado. For the 2007/08 season Dowd moved to the Philadelphia Flyers . In the summer of 2008 he ended his career.
