The 2000 NHL Expansion Draft took place on June 23, 2000 in Calgary , Alberta . The expansion draft was carried out because the ice hockey league NHL was increased by two teams and the roster of the newly formed teams Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild had to be filled with players.

regulate

26 of the existing 28 teams in the league were allowed to suspend one goalkeeper, five defenders and nine attackers or two goalkeepers, three defenders and seven attackers from their squad so that they could not be selected by an expansion team . The ranks of the Nashville Predators and Atlanta Thrashers were completely banned because they only existed for a year and two.

For teams that decided to take the variant with a banned goalkeeper, there were initially no restrictions. Anyone who opted for the variant with two banned goalkeepers had to make sure that another goalkeeper who had played at least ten games in the 1999/2000 season or 25 games in the 1998/99 and 1999/2000 seasons remained unbanned . Only games in which the goalkeeper has been on the ice for at least 31 minutes are counted.

In addition, each team must leave a defender unbanned who played at least 40 games in the 1999/2000 season or 70 games in the 1998/99 and 1999/2000 seasons. In addition, each team must leave two strikers unblocked for whom the same rule applies.

A total of 52 players could be selected in the draft, two from each existing team. Only one goalkeeper and one defender could be selected from each of the established teams. Columbus and Minnesota had to choose 3 goalkeepers, 8 defenders and 13 attackers with their first 24 choices. The remaining two choices per team could be players from any position.
