Radim Bičánek (born January 18, 1975 in Uherské Hradiště , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player . During his career he made 129 appearances in the National Hockey League for the Chicago Blackhawks and the Columbus Blue Jackets . He also played for many years with HC Znojemští Orli , HC Kometa Brno and HC Energie Karlovy Vary in the Czech extra league .

Career

Radim Bičánek began his career as a hockey player in the youth department of HC Dukla Jihlava , for whose professional team he made his debut in the 1992/93 season in the first division , the highest Czechoslovak division. In his rookie year , he scored two goals in 43 games and made three assists. He was then selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 1993 in the second round as a total of 27 players by the Ottawa Senators . First, the defender played for two years in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League for the Belleville Bulls , before he played for the first time in the National Hockey League for the Ottawa Senators towards the end of the 1994/95 season. In the entire following season he was exclusively for their farm team , the Prince Edward Island Senators , in the American Hockey League for use. With the Ottawa Senators, he could never fully assert himself in the following three years, so that he was mostly on the ice for their farm teams in the minor leagues . These were the Detroit Vipers , Manitoba Moose and Grand Rapids Griffins in the International Hockey League , and the Worcester IceCats in the AHL.

On March 12, 1999 Bičánek was given shortly before the end of the trade deadline in exchange for a six-round vote for the 1999 NHL Entry Draft to the Chicago Blackhawks . In a little more than one season he ran only 18 times in the NHL for the team from Illinois, while he was active in the 1999/2000 season in a total of 79 games for their IHL farm team Cleveland Lumberjacks . On June 23, 2000, the Columbus Blue Jackets signed the Czechs as part of the NHL Expansion Draft . After he was only sporadically accrued to the Blue Jackets in the 2000/01 season in the NHL and mainly for their AHL farm team Syracuse Crunch , he was able to fight for a regular place in the NHL squad in the following season . In the only full NHL season of his career, he scored one goal in 60 games and gave five assists. The 2002/03 season he spent again in the AHL, first with the Syracuse Crunch and then with the Binghamton Senators .

After a year-long hiatus from ice hockey, Bičánek returned to the Czech Republic in 2004 and played for HC Znojemští Orli in the extra league over the next five years - in the last two years as team captain. After the license sale of HC Znojemští Orli, he moved within the league to HC Kometa Brno for the 2009/10 season , for which he was on the ice until 2013 and was runner-up in 2012.

Between 2013 and 2016 he ended his career at HC Energie Karlovy Vary .

International

For the Czech junior national teams , Bičánek took part in the U18 European Junior Championship in 1993 and the 1993 World Junior Championship . In the former, he was named best defender and voted into the All-Star team.

For the men's selection of the Czech Republic , he ran in three games on the Euro Hockey Tour in 2006 .
