history
The IceCats were founded in 1994 when Roy Boe - owner of the New York Islanders - acquired the Springfield Indians franchise from the AHL and the team moved to Worcester. The team started the season at short notice with free agent players, but without being a farm team of an NHL team. Shortly before the end of the season, Boe and head coach and general manager Jim Roberts signed a contract with the St. Louis Blues .
In 1998, the Peoria Rivermen of the East Coast Hockey League , the farm team of the IceCats. In the 2000/01 season, Roy Boe sold the team to the St. Louis Blues, which in turn sold the IceCats to the owner of the Peoria Rivermen on November 9, 2004. The end came in the 2005/06 season: The new owner finally moved the franchise to Peoria, where the team still plays today.
As the successor club in Worcester, the Worcester Sharks are hunting for points in the AHL.
