The Buffalo Bisons were an American ice hockey franchise of the American Hockey League , which represented the city of Buffalo , but was based in Fort Erie , Ontario . The venue for the bison was the Peace Bridge Arena .

history

The Buffalo Bisons were founded as a franchise of the Canadian Professional Hockey League , in which they were active in the 1928-29 season. After the season, the league became the International Hockey League , which the Buffalo Bisons also joined and whose championship they won in 1932 and 1933 after rounds. In addition, Buffalo reached the final in the first IHL season 1929/30, in which it was defeated by the Cleveland Indians with 1: 3 wins.

When the IHL merged with the Canadian-American Hockey League to form the International-American Hockey League in 1936 , the bison also joined this, but had to play in a small arena in Niagara Falls , Ontario , because their home stadium collapsed on March 17, 1936 and they had to play away for the remainder of the 1935/36 IHL season.

After only eleven games (three wins, eight defeats), the bisons stopped playing in the IAHL on December 6, 1936, as they had got into financial difficulties due to the reduced income from the smaller arena and could no longer pay the players' salaries .

A team of the same name played in the American Hockey League from 1940 to 1970 .
