The Cornwall Aces were a Canadian ice hockey franchise of the American Hockey League based in Cornwall , Ontario . The venue for the Aces was the Ed Lumley Arena .
history
The Cornwall Aces were in 1993 as AHL - farm team of the Quebec Nordiques of the National Hockey League was founded. The team was created by relocating and renaming the franchise that previously ran as Halifax Citadels in the AHL in Halifax , Nova Scotia . In their first season, the Cornwall Aces were able to qualify for the playoffs, where they only failed in the third round at the Moncton Hawks . The following season was similarly successful when they made it into the third round, but they failed again. In the last round before the finals, Cornwall lost 2-0 in the series against the Fredericton Canadiens . In their last season, in which they competed as a farm team for the relocated and Colorado Avalanche named franchise, the Aces were eliminated in the second playoff round and could not build on the successes of the first two seasons.
Following the 1995/96 season, the Cornwall Aces franchise was initially shut down as Colorado focused on working with its other AHL farm team, the Hershey Bears . After the rights to the Cornwall Aces were dormant for three years, the franchise was bought by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1999 , who relocated it to Wilkes-Barre and continued under the name Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins as their new farm team.
