The St. John's Maple Leafs were a Canadian ice hockey team from St. John's , Newfoundland that played in the American Hockey League from 1991 to 2005 . The franchise was at this time the Toronto Maple Leafs farm team from the NHL , whose logo they also used in a slightly different form.

history

In 1991, the Newmarket Saints, up to now the Toronto Maple Leafs' farm team, relocated from Newmarket , Ontario to St. John's to play under the new name. Already in their first season the Maple Leafs reached the final of the Calder Cup , the championship of the AHL. The final was lost, however, 3-4 against the Adirondack Red Wings . In the following years you could not achieve this success, but four times you managed to get into the second round of the play-offs.

In the 1980s and 1990s, the majority of the teams in the American Hockey League were from the Atlantic Provinces of Canada, which enabled NHL teams to continue paying players who had been sent to the minor league in Canadian dollars . In 2004, however, the St. John's Maple Leafs were the last remaining team from this region. Although the franchise was extremely popular and was able to have good viewership, choosing the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2005 to relocate the team in the hometown of the great cooperation partner because thus could be saved to a travel costs, on the other hand, a new tenant for the Ricoh Coliseum are found had to. Thus, the team has been playing as Toronto Marlies since the 2005/06 season .

The St. John's Maple Leafs played their home games at Memorial Stadium , and in 2001 they finally moved to the Mile One Center , where they played until they moved to Toronto.
