Newmarket [ ˈnuˌmɑɹkət ] is a city 45 km north of Toronto , Ontario , Canada . It is part of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and the Golden Horseshoe . Newmarket is the administrative seat of the York area .

The city is 239 meters above sea level and extends over 38.07 km². It is bordered to the north by East Gwillimbury , to the east by Whitchurch-Stouffville , to the south by Aurora and to the west by King .

Newmarket is north of the Oakridge moraines . The largest river in Newmarket is the East Holland River. All other rivers that flow through Newmarket drain into it. There are two quarry ponds in Newmarket: Fairy Lake is operated by the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority and is a preferred recreational spot in the city. Bogart Pond is the smaller but wider lake. Like Fairy Lake, it was a mill pond.

Residents

According to the results of the 2006 Canadian census , the population is 74,295. The planning department of the York region calculated a number of 77,518 as of March 31, 2006. According to the official Statistics Canada population, the 2011 population census showed a population of 79,978. The population density is 2036 inhabitants per km².
