James Gerald "Jim" Brennan (born May 8, 1977 in East York , Canada ) is a former Canadian soccer player and current coach . The mostly used on the left defender Brennan played twelve years in English professional football and participated with the Canadian national team in several continental championships and the Confederations Cup in 2001. He is currently an assistant coach at Toronto Football Club .

Club career

Brennan came to Bristol City from the Canadian amateur club Sora Lazio in 1994 and began his professional career there in 1996. In 1998 he rose with Bristol in the Football League First Division , after the immediate relegation to the Second Division he moved for 1.5 million pounds, a record sum for a Canadian footballer, to the second division Nottingham Forest .

At Forest he first ousted the previous left-back Alan Rogers , but after a series of injuries his form deteriorated and he was finally loaned out to Huddersfield Town for two months towards the end of the 2000/01 season , where he was not in either the starting eleven could play. After his return to Nottingham, his performance improved again and he established himself in the starting eleven. In 2003 he reached the promotion playoffs with Nottingham, but in the semifinals he was defeated with his team Sheffield United in the second leg 3: 4 after the first leg ended 1: 1. Brennan then left Nottingham, presumably because the contract extension he had been presented with did not meet his expectations as a result of the club's austerity measures.

Brennan then joined the league rivals Norwich City , with whom he rose to the Premier League in 2004 . During his time at Norwich, also because of ongoing injury problems, he never got past Adam Drury and Darren Huckerby , who were on the left , and made 43 league appearances by the time he left, including ten in his only season in the Premier League. In January 2006, he and his contract expiring at the end of the season were given to the second division club Southampton FC .

Southampton did not renew his contract at the end of the season and Brennan returned to North America. In September 2006, Brennan was the first to sign a contract with the newly formed Canadian MLS team Toronto FC and led the team as captain in their first season in 2007. He was a member of the 2008 MLS All-Star Team , which met West Ham United at BMO Field in Toronto and won 3-2. In April 2010, shortly after the start of the 2010 season, he announced his retirement and moved into the management of the club.

National team

Brennan was part of the 1993 Canadian selection that took part in the 1993 U-17 World Cup in Japan. He came to two missions in the preliminary round of his team.

In April 1999, the defender made his debut for the Canadian national team in a friendly in Northern Ireland. A year later he took part with the team as a regular in the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2000 and won the tournament after a 2-0 win over Colombia. With this title win, Canada was eligible to participate in the Confederations Cup 2001 in Japan and South Korea, and won there at least one respectable success in the preliminary round with a 0-0 draw against Brazil.

At the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2002 Brennan reached third place with Canada, the participation in the Gold Cup 2005 already ended in the group stage. At the tournaments in 2003 and 2007 he was not on the squad. His international career ended after 49 appearances on September 10, 2008 with a 2-1 defeat against Mexico in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup .
