MLS All-Star Game

Major League Soccer logo

Since the first season of the US Major League Soccer league in 1996, an all-star game has been held annually between July and August of that year. However, the mode is not yet as consolidated as in the established US professional leagues in other sports. In the early years this was used as a guide and played the usual duel between the two conferences (west against east). In 1998 they deviated from it and divided the teams into Americans and foreigners, in 2002 the remaining All-Stars played against the US national team .

In 2003 the attempt began to increase the popularity of the league both at home and abroad by letting the best players of the MLS compete against renowned foreign teams. After the 2003 game against Deportivo Guadalajara from Mexico, the planned game against Real Madrid had to be canceled in 2004 because the Spaniards had to qualify for the UEFA Champions League , which is why they quickly returned to the traditional west against east. Instead, an MLS selection took place in Spain against Real Madrid in 2005 for the Trofeo Santiago Bernabéu . This game, which officially does not count as an All-Star Game, was clearly won by Madrid 5-0. Then there were, with the exception of Celtic Glasgow 2007, duels with the English teams Chelsea FC , West Ham United , Everton FC and Manchester United .

The opponent in the All-Star Game 2013 was for the first time an Italian team with AS Roma , in 2014 a German team competed for the first time with FC Bayern Munich . For the 20th MLS All-Star Game on July 29, 2015, the MLS All-Stars competed in Dick's Sporting Goods Park , the stadium of the Colorado Rapids , against the English first division club Tottenham Hotspur . At the 22nd MLS All-Star Game, which was played against Real Madrid on August 2, 2017, Bastian Schweinsteiger was also in the starting line-up.
