The Children's Mercy Park is a soccer stadium in the US city of Kansas City in the state of Kansas . The plant was opened on 9 June 2011 and since that time, the home of the MLS - Franchise Sporting Kansas City . The capacity for a soccer game is set at 18,467 spectators, with an expansion of up to 25,000 possible.
history
Planning and construction
From 1996 to 2007 Kansas City played at Arrowhead Stadium . This was renovated in 2007 and the team started playing in the CommunityAmerica Ballpark in 2008 . The team owners had been looking for a suitable location for a football-specific stadium for a long time.
First, the building was on the other side of the state line in Kansas City ( Missouri planned). However, due to the economic crisis, this project was abandoned again. A suitable area was finally found in the west of Kansas City ( Kansas ). In September 2009, investors asked officials from Wyandotte Counties and Kansas state whether it would be possible to obtain grants for the stadium construction. After the approval by the authorities, the foundation stone was laid on January 20, 2010.
Once completed, the stadium will hold a total of 18,500 spectators and can be expanded to accommodate concerts or other events to a capacity of 25,000. The spectator stands will be completely covered. In addition, the venue u. a. 36 VIP - boxes , five business clubs, six changing rooms, four dressing rooms (for concerts) and two video walls . The playing field will be equipped with turf heating and cooling. In addition to the stadium, an event plaza is also being built for various events.
Allocation of naming rights
On March 8, 2011 it was announced that the Lance Armstrong Foundation , a non-profit organization that campaigns against cancer, secured the naming rights to the stadium for six years. The organization pays nothing, but is also supported by the club in its commitment, also financially. On January 15, 2013, the name rights contract was triggered. In November 2015, the Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City acquired the naming rights to the venue for ten years. In addition to the name change, a more extensive collaboration between Sporting Kansas City and the Pediatric Hospital was agreed.

The official opening took place on June 9, 2011 with the game Sporting Kansas City against Chicago Fire . The game ended 0-0. The stadium also celebrated its international premiere at the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2011 . On June 14, 2011, the games Canada against Panama (1: 1) and Guadeloupe against the United States (0: 1) were played here.
