The Mapfre Stadium (or MAPFRE Stadium ) is a soccer stadium in the US city of Columbus in the state of Ohio . It is the first stadium in the United States to be designed and built specifically for soccer . The complex was opened in May 1999 and is primarily through the franchise of the Columbus Crew SC from the Major League Soccer used (MLS). On March 3, 2015, the insurance company MAPFRE Insurance , based in Spain , was pronounced: "MAH-fray", the new name sponsor of the venue.
The stadium
The facility, which then had 22,555 seats, was built within just nine months and cost around 28.5 million US dollars . The venue was built on the grounds of the Ohio Exposition Center and State Fairgrounds. In 2008 a concert stage was added to the stadium. This reduced the capacity by 2,410 spectators. It holds a total of 20,145 spectators for football matches. Up to 30,000 visitors can attend concerts in the football stadium. The facility opened on May 15, 1999 with a game between Columbus Crew and New England Revolution .
Ownership and Financing
The stadium was financed exclusively by private funds. The Hunt Sports Group was the owner and sole financier of the arena until 2013. On 30 July 2013, founded by Anthony Precourt took Precourt Sports Ventures (PSV), LLC , the franchise Columbus Crew SC along with the stadium.
