Positive drug test in Mexico
On June 9, 2011, it was announced that five Mexican players tested positive for Clenbuterol . This result relates to a test that was carried out on May 21, 2011 during the Mexican training camp before the Gold Cup. Zinha , Christian Bermúdez , Édgar Dueñas , Francisco Rodríguez and Guillermo Ochoa were then suspended by the Mexican Football Association. CONCACAF Secretary General Chuck Blazer immediately convened a meeting of the member associations to discuss the matter. CONCACAF spokesman Ben Spencer said the game against El Salvador would remain in the ranking. However, the meeting was adjourned to gather further information. The Mexican Football Association announced on June 14, 2011 that the second test, the so-called B-sample , was negative. On June 19, Mexico was given permission to replace the suspended players. After food contamination was identified as the cause, the Mexican Football Association, with the support of FIFA, decided not to punish the players who tested positive.

In the final round, the 12 participants form three preliminary round groups with four teams each, of which the first two qualify for the quarter-finals.
