The Salvadoran national soccer team , also known as La Selecta (The Selection) , is the team selected by the Federación Salvadoreña de Fútbol to select the best soccer players from the Central American state of El Salvador . El Salvador has so far qualified for a soccer world championship twice , but lost all six preliminary round matches there, including 1:10 against Hungary at the 1982 World Cup in Spain , which is still the highest defeat of a team at all soccer world championships.
history
After winning the qualifying games for the 1970 World Cup in Mexico against Honduras , the so-called football war broke out between the two neighboring countries , killing thousands. The occasion was the first leg on June 8, 1969 in Honduras , which caused a riot. The causes, however, lay in the strong social tensions between the Honduran population and the Salvadoran minority in Honduras. Six days after the fighting broke out on July 14, 1969, an armistice was reached, and peace was only concluded in 1980.
