Carlos de los Cobos Martínez (born December 10, 1958 in Matamoros ) is a Mexican football coach and former player.

Player career

Carlos de los Cobos was active as a player exclusively in his home country Mexico and played from 1977 to 1994 for various larger clubs, mainly at Club América and the Querétaro Fútbol Club . With Club América he won the Mexican championship in 1984, 1988 and 1989 . He also won the national cup with CF Monterrey in 1991 and the CONCACAF Cup Winners' Cup two years later .

National team

For the Mexican national soccer team de los Cobos played from 1983 to 1986. Among other things, he was part of the squad at the 1986 World Cup in his own country. At this World Cup he was used in 3 out of 5 games.

Coaching career

Carlos de los Cobos began his coaching career where he left off as a player, at the Querétaro Fútbol Club . He also coached the teams of UANL Tigres and the clubs Club América , Celaya Fútbol Club and CD Irapuato . In 2006 the Mexican went abroad for the first time to train the CD FAS. A short time later, he became head coach of the national soccer team of El Salvador , which at that time had not won a game for almost two years. Under de los Cobos' direction, the team achieved the highest victory in the association's history with a 12-0 victory over the Anguilla national soccer team on February 6, 2008. In qualifying for the 2010 World Cup , he and his team reached the finals. There El Salvador dropped out after a 5th place and could not qualify for the 2010 World Cup. On December 14, 2009, de los Cobos declared that he would no longer be available after his contract expired. He cited a lack of motivation on his part as the reason.

On January 8, 2010, Carlos de los Cobos became the new coach of the Major League Soccer franchise Chicago Fire . On May 30, 2011, he was fired from the MLS franchise and replaced by Frank Klopas . In 2012 he briefly coached the Querétaro Fútbol Club in his native Mexico.
