The Antiguan-Barbud national soccer team is the national soccer team of the Caribbean island state of Antigua and Barbuda . The team belongs to the sporty middle class of the continental association CONCACAF . So far, the team has not yet managed to qualify for the CONCACAF Gold Cup or the World Cup. Nevertheless one could achieve some respectable successes so far. In 2005, for example, they defeated the future World Cup participants Trinidad and Tobago 2-1.

Tournaments

World Championship

  • 1930 to 1970 - did not participate
  • 1974 - The country first took part in a qualification for a FIFA world tournament for the 1974 World Cup in Germany . In group 6 of the CONCACAF zone, Antigua and Barbuda had to face Trinidad and Tobago and Suriname . The team never won four games, and they even lost 1:11 against Trinidad and Tobago.
  • 1978 and 1982 - did not participate
  • 1986 - In qualifying for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico , Antigua and Barbuda could not survive the first round again. The first leg against Haiti was lost 4-0, the second leg won 2-1, but Haiti got into the second round due to the higher number of goals scored.
  • 1990 - Qualification for the 1990 World Cup in Italy began for Antigua and Barbuda with a 1-0 defeat against the national football team of the Netherlands Antilles . The second leg ended after 90 minutes with a score of 1-0 for Antigua and Barbuda, whereupon the extra time had to decide. The Netherlands Antilles won 3-1 and Antigua and Barbuda were eliminated.
  • 1994 - In the first round of qualifying for the 1994 World Cup in the USA , there was another clash with the Netherlands Antilles. The first leg ended 1: 1, the second leg 3: 0 for Antigua and Barbuda. For the first time, the country was able to move into the second round of the CONCACAF zone. There they were defeated by Bermuda with 0: 3 and 1: 2 and were eliminated.
  • 1998 - Qualification for the 1998 World Cup in France began for the team with a 3: 3 win against the Dominican national soccer team . The second leg was lost, however, 1: 3 and again Antigua and Barbuda could not reach the second round.
  • 2002 - In qualifying for the 2002 World Cup , Antigua and Barbuda made it into the second round. After progressing 0-0 and 1-1 due to the higher number of away goals against Bermuda , you had to play against the Vincentian national football team in the second round . Antigua and Barbuda won the first leg 2-1, but the second leg ended 0-4 and Antigua and Barbuda were eliminated.
  • 2006 - The first round of qualifying for the 2006 World Cup in Germany was the final destination for Antigua and Barbuda. The first leg against the Netherlands Antilles was won 2-0, but the second leg was lost 3-0 and the team was eliminated.
  • 2010 - As part of qualifying for the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa, the team met the Aruba national team in the first round of the CONCACAF zone . Antigua and Barbuda won the first leg in Oranjestad ( Aruba ) on February 6, 2008 3-0. The second leg in St. John's (Antigua and Barbuda) ended 1-0. The second round of qualification started for the national team on June 17, 2008 in St. John's against Cuba . After the team was able to take the lead twice, the game was still lost 3: 4. The second leg took place on June 22nd in Havana ( Cuba ) and ended clearly with 0: 4 from the point of view of Antigua and Barbuda. So the team was eliminated.
  • 2014 - In qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , Haiti , Curaçao and the American Virgin Islands were faced in the 2nd round . With 5 wins from 6 games you moved into the 3rd round as first group. There you met the USA , Jamaica and Guatemala . With only one point from 6 games, however, they were eliminated as the bottom of the group.
  • 2018 - In qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia , the team met St. Lucia in the second round in June 2015 and progressed to the next round with 1: 3 and 4: 1, but there they had to win 1: 0 and 0-2 to give Guatemala beaten.
