The Antigua Recreation Ground , the national stadium of Antigua and Barbuda , is located in St. John's on the island of Antigua . The Antigua and Barbuda national soccer team and the West Indies cricket team use the pitch.
Cricket at the Antigua Recreation Ground
The first match was played on February 22, 1978 as One-Day International . The West Indies faced Australia . From March 28 to April 1, 1981, the West Indies and England faced each other in the first test match .
Viv Richards , Antigua's most famous cricketer, managed the fastest test match century with only 56 balls in 1986 at the Antigua Recreation Ground in a game against England . Brian Lara , batsman of the West Indies, managed a record of 375 runs in a test match innings in a 1994 game against England in the same stadium . In 2004 he improved the record held by the Australian Matthew Hayden to 400 *, again in a test match against England.
After the construction of the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium , no further test matches were initially held in the Antigua Recreation Ground. However, after the second test match between the West Indies and England, which was held in Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, had to be canceled on February 13, 2009, a third test match in the series took place in the Antigua Recreation Ground on February 15, 2009.
