Saint John's , officially City of Saint John's or St. John's City , is the capital of the island state of Antigua and Barbuda in the Caribbean . It is located in the northwest of the island of Antigua on a bay and has 21,926 inhabitants (2013).
history
This largest city in the island state was laid out in 1632 by English colonists from St. Kitts and Nevis . The settlement has since been the administrative center of Antigua and its neighboring island of Barbuda. From 1663 colonists from England started arriving in Saint John's. In the 18th century the city was the headquarters for the part of the Royal Fleet stationed in the Antilles. In 1981, Saint John's became the capital of the newly formed independent state of Antigua and Barbuda.
The Anglican diocese of North Eastern Caribbean and Aruba of the Church in the Province of the West Indies , which includes all the islands between Puerto Rico and Guadeloupe, has had its seat in the city since the 19th century . Since 1971, Saint John's has also been the headquarters of the Roman Catholic diocese of Saint John's-Basseterre .
Cityscape
The old core city was connected to the east of the harbor and extended in the 18th century, planned in a rectangle, within the boundaries of today's Dickenson Bay Street - Stapleton Lane / Independance Avenue - South Street . From there, St. John's grew into a star shape, and today, with its suburbs, occupies the entire north-west of the island. The old city limits are particularly noticeable inland from the old town around Victoria Park .
Dominating the cityscape is the Anglican St. John's Cathedral , main church of St. John's Parish in the city and episcopal church of the Anglican diocese.
economy
The place is the commercial center of the state as well as the main port of the island of Antigua . The city is an export center for sugar, rum and cotton, as well as for the manufacture of handicrafts, fiber products, pottery and textiles. An important company in the city was the software house SlySoft . Tourism is of great economic importance as in the entire state.
