Sir Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards KNH OBE (nicknamed "Master Blaster") (* 7. March 1952 in Saint John's , Antigua and Barbuda ), better known as Viv Richards, is a former cricket player for the West Indies cricket team played . He was named one of the top five cricketers of the 20th century by a jury from the Wisden Cricketers' Almanack . Also by the Wisden Almanack, he was voted one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 1977. Richards was captain of the West Indies cricket team in 43 encounters in test cricket and 108 one-day international matches (ODI) between 1984 and 1991 .
Career
Participation in world championships
Viv Richards took part in four Cricket World Cups with the West Indies team. In 1975 and 1979 he won the tournament with his team. In the 1979 World Cup final against England, Richards scored 138 runs and was voted Player of the Game. At the World Cup 1983 he and his team lost to the outsider India in the final. At the 1987 World Cup , he was eliminated with the West Indies team in the preliminary round.
Tests and ODIs
Viv Richards played 121 tests during his career, scoring 8,540 runs (50.23 runs per wicket). He played his first test on November 22, 1974 against India in Bangalore. His last appearance in a test was against England. This was held from August 8 to August 12, 1991 in London. Richards also played 187 ODIs, in which he scored a total of 6721 runs (47 runs per wicket). Viv Richards made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka on June 7, 1975. This was the West Indies' first match at the Cricket World Cup in England. He played his last ODI against England on May 27, 1991.
Others
Not only was Richards a great cricketer, he also played soccer. With the national team of Antigua and Barbuda he played games in the qualifying tournament for the 1974 World Cup . In 1999 Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards was knighted.
