John William Ashe (2009)

John William Ashe (born August 20, 1954 in Saint John’s ( Antigua and Barbuda ); † June 22, 2016 in Dobbs Ferry , New York ) was President of the United Nations General Assembly during its 68th session. He was also the ambassador of his country Antigua and Barbuda to the United Nations .

Life

Ashe studied at the University of Pennsylvania , Saint Mary's University Halifax and what is now Dalhousie University , also in Halifax .

Since 1989 Ashe has worked in various positions at the United Nations. The highlight of his career was his election as President of the General Assembly of the United Nations on June 14, 2013, which, unlike his predecessor Vuk Jeremić , took place without a fight vote. He was married and the father of two children.

Corruption allegations

On October 6, 2015, it became known that US law enforcement officials accused John Ashe of accepting bribes. He is said to have accepted funds and in-kind contributions from Chinese businessmen, including Ng Lap Seng , to promote a UN conference center in the Macau Special Administrative Region of China and Chinese business interests in his home country. He was arrested on charges of corruption.
