Humayun Rasheed Choudhury

Humayun Rasheed Choudhury (born November 11, 1928 in Sylhet , † July 10, 2001 in Dhaka ) was a Bangladeshi politician and diplomat . He served his country including as foreign minister and also headed the 41st session of the General Assembly of the United Nations as its president.

Life

He was born to Abdur Rasheed and Begum Serajunessa Choudhury into a family of politicians. His father was a member of the Assam Provincial Parliament , and later the Parliament of British India . After independence, his mother was a member of the parliament of Pakistan for what was then East Pakistan and what is now Bangladesh . After studying at the Muslim University in Aligarh , India and in London , he entered the diplomatic service of Pakistan in 1953. While serving in the Pakistani Ministry, he graduated from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Massachusetts .

During the Bangladesh War of Independence , he was posted to India in 1971/72 as a representative of his native Bangladesh. From 1972 to 1976 he was Bangladesh's first ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany , Austria , Switzerland and the Holy See, as well as the first permanent representative of his country to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

Subsequently, he became, again as the first, ambassador to Saudi Arabia , Jordan and Oman as well as an additional permanent representative of Bangladesh to the organization of the Islamic Conference . 1981/82 he was Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs in Dhaka and 1982–1985 finally Ambassador to the USA .

In July 1985, Choudhury became Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh, which he remained until 1988. In September 1986 the UN General Assembly elected him its chairman for a year. In addition, Choudhury was elected to the Parliament of Bangladesh in 1986, 1988 and 1996, which he chaired from 1996 until his death in 2001.

He was married and had a daughter.
