Salim Ahmed Salim (born January 23, 1942 in Zanzibar ) is a Tanzanian diplomat and politician. He had, among others, the offices of the Prime Minister of his country, of both the President of the UN General Assembly and the UN Security Council and the Secretary General of the Organization of African Unity held.

Career

Early life (until 1969)

Salim was the editor-in-chief of a Tanzanian daily newspaper in the early 1960s. He then became a diplomat. Salim was first from 1964 to 1965 ambassador of the still independent Zanzibar in Egypt and then from 1965 to 1968 for the now unified Tanzania in India , during his stay in Delhi he studied international relations at the university there . In 1968/1969 he headed the Africa and Middle East Department in the Tanzanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1969 he was appointed ambassador of his country to the People's Republic of China and North Korea .

United Nations (1970–1980)

From 1970 to 1980 Salim was Tanzania's permanent representative to the United Nations in New York . At the same time he was ambassador to Cuba , Guyana , Barbados , Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago . During this time he headed the United Nations Security Council in 1976 as President and in 1979/1980 the General Assembly of the United Nations during the 34th ordinary session and the eleventh special session and during the sixth and seventh emergency sessions. In addition, he was from 1972 to 1980 chairman of the UN Special Committee on Decolonization (Committee of 24) . He sought the office of Secretary General of the United Nations unsuccessfully.

Back in Tanzania (1980–1989)

In 1980 Salim was called back to Tanzania as Foreign Minister. He held this position until 1984 when he became Prime Minister of his homeland. In 1985 he became Deputy Prime Minister, Defense and Interior Minister. He held these positions until 1989.

Organization for African Unity (1989-2001)

Salim was elected Secretary General of the Organization for African Unity on September 19, 1989 . He was confirmed twice in this office that he held a total of twelve years. During this time he specifically promoted the advancement of women in management positions at the OAU.

Later posts (since 2001)

Salim is currently Chancellor of the Hubert Kairuki Memorial University in Dar es Salaam . He is currently the African Union's Special Representative for the Darfur Region . Salim tried to become the new president of Tanzania, but failed in his party's primary elections. He is a member of many international committees.

Others

Salim is married and has three children. He was awarded a total of six honorary doctorates .
