Edward Ngoyayi Lowassa (* 1953 in Arusha , Tanzania ) was Prime Minister of Tanzania from December 30, 2005 to February 7, 2008.

Life

Lowassa first studied drama at the University of Dar es Salaam and completed his master’s examination in social politics at the University of Bath in England.

He is a member of the former Tanzanian unity party Chama Cha Mapinduzi . Since the late 1980s, Lowassa has held various ministerial offices, from 2000 to 2005 as Minister for Water and Livestock. From 1990 he was also a member of the Tanzanian parliament.

Lowassa was elected to office by Parliament on December 29, 2005 on the proposal of President Jakaya Kikwete with 312 votes and only two votes against. He announced the continuation of the market economy-oriented course of the previous government. On February 7, 2008 , he announced his resignation due to a corruption scandal . President Kikwete named Mizengo Pinda as his successor. In the presidential election in Tanzania in 2015 he was defeated by the politician John Magufuli .
