The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) is the most important higher education institution in Tanzania . The main campus is located about 13 kilometers west of Dar es Salaam on the so-called Observation Hill.

history

The university was established on July 1, 1970 by Law No. 12 of 1970 after the University of East Africa was dissolved. Before that, the UDSM was in association with Makerere University in ( Uganda ) and the University of Nairobi in ( Kenya ).

The colleges MUCHS (Muhimbili College of Health Sciences) and UCLAS (University College of Lands and Architectural Studies), which previously belonged to UDSM, have now been expanded and spun off as independent universities (MUHAS Muhimbili University of Health Allied Sciences and Ardhi University).
