The Makerere University (MAK) is Uganda's first university in the capital Kampala . With more than 30,000 students, it is one of the largest in East and Central Africa. Its name refers to the locality Makerere , which today belongs to the urban area of Kampala.
history
The previous institution was founded in 1922 as a vocational school. In January of the same year it was renamed "Uganda Technical University". 14 students began to learn carpentry, construction and mechanics there. The university soon offered various other courses: in medical practice, agriculture, veterinary science and teacher training.
In 1937 the university began to develop into a facility for higher education and offered post-school degrees. In 1949 it became a university in the true sense of the word, with a special reference to the University of London . It soon became a university for all of East Africa, with courses that could lead to the general degrees of the University of London.
With the establishment of the University of East Africa (German about: University of East Africa) on June 29, 1963, the period of special relationship with the University of London ended, and degrees from the University of East Africa were to be acquired. On July 1, 1970, Makerere became an independent national university of the Republic of Uganda. Degree programs and postgraduate courses are offered that lead to personal degrees.
In November 2016, after months of strikes and unrest, the university was closed by President Museveni for about 2 months.
