Mukhisa Kituyi (born 1956 in Bungoma County , Western Kenya ) is a Kenyan politician and has been Secretary General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) since 2013 .

Youth and education

Mukhisa Kituyi was born in West Kenya in 1956 to Jamin Kituyi and Joinah Mukasa Kituyi. From 1977 he completed a BA in Political Science and International Relations at the University of Nairobi and Makerere University in the Ugandan capital Kampala and graduated in 1982 with honors. He obtained a diploma in comparative economics at the Norwegian University of Bergen in 1983, a Master of Philosophy in development research in 1986 and a Ph.D. in 1998. in social anthropology .

Career

Kituyi worked as a researcher at the social science Christian Michelsen Institute in Bergen from 1989 to 1991 , after which he was program director of the African Center for Technology Studies in Nairobi and the representation of the Norwegian Agency for International Development (NORAD) in Nairobi.

He was elected to the Kenyan parliament for the first time in 1992 and won a seat in the next two elections. From 2002 to 2007 he was Kenyan Minister of Trade and Industry. During this time, Kituyi also headed the Council of Ministers of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and the African Council of Trade Ministers for two years .

He also headed the Council of Ministers of the ACP Group and was negotiator for the East and South African ministers during the economic negotiations between the European Union and the ACP countries. He was the main person in charge of the agriculture negotiations that took place at the sixth WTO Ministerial Conference in Hong Kong in 2005 .

From 2008 to 2012, Kituyi was a member of a team of advisors for the presidents of the East African Community to better link the regional economies.

From 2011 to 2012 he was an advisor to the Commission of the African Union on the development of a Pan-African Free Trade Area .

Kituyi became head of the Kenya Institute of Governance , based in Nairobi . The institute is a think tank that primarily deals with the link between academic research and practical politics.

In 2012, Kituyi worked as an external expert for the Africa Growth Initiative of the US think tank Brookings Institution , Washington, DC , where the previous fellow had been.

He took up his post as Secretary General of UNCTAD on September 1, 2013 and was re-elected by the UN General Assembly for a second four-year term in July 2017 .

Private life

Kituyi is married to Ling Merete Kituyi born. Andersen and father of four children.
