The University of Nairobi (also known as UON ), based in Nairobi, is the largest university in Kenya . There were 56,279 students enrolled in the 2010–2011 academic year.

history

It was founded in 1956 when the first high school graduates were admitted to the Royal Technical College . On June 25, 1961 , the Royal Technical College was converted into a university called the Royal College Nairobi , at the time the second university to be established in East Africa . At that time there was a close relationship with the University of London , for example the English university awarded the academic titles. On May 20, 1964, the Royal College Nairobi was incorporated into the transnational East African University of East Africa as University College Nairobi . The close academic connection to the University of London was canceled. After the University of East Africa was dissolved in 1970 , the university was given its current name University of Nairobi, making it the first national university in Kenya.
