Newton Kulundu

Newton Wanjala Kulundu (born June 30, 1948 , † March 7, 2010 in Nairobi ) was a Kenyan politician .

biography

After attending Kakamega High School from 1965 to 1968 and then at Kenyatta College , he studied medicine at the Medical School at the University of Nairobi between 1971 and 1976 . He then completed a one-year postgraduate course at the University of Loma Linda in California and completed this with a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Public Health.

After returning to Kenya, he became a member of the Ministry of Health in 1977 and worked there until 1984. There he was responsible as a senior official for health administration in the districts of Kisumu , Kwale , Lamu and Kisii Central . In particular, he was responsible for the expansion of the vaccination program in these districts, the training of medical staff and the preparation of a health program for the municipal development programs. He later became executive director of the Brooke Bond Company, where he designed an award-winning health program.

Kulundu began his political career in 1992 when he was first elected member of parliament . There he was until his electoral defeat in 2007 for the Forum for the Restoration of Democracy-Kenya (FORD-K) belonging to the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC ) of Musikari Kombo, representing the interests of the Lurambi constituency. He later became chairman of the Parliament's Committee on Health, Housing, Labor and Social Welfare and, as such, was also the organizer of a health conference for members of parliament after the then President Daniel arap Moi described AIDS as a "national disaster".

After his re-election in 2002, as a supporter of the new President Mwai Kibaki, he was initially appointed Minister for Environment, Natural Resources and Wildlife. As part of a cabinet reshuffle, he was Minister for Labor and Human Resource Development from 2006 to 2008.

After leaving the cabinet, he withdrew from political life and finally died after a long illness.
