Lamu County is a county in Kenya . The capital of the county is Lamu . In Lamu County in 2019 143,920 people lived on 6,273.1 km². Lamu is located on the north coast of Kenya and is one of the six counties with coastal access in Kenya. It is bordered by Tana River County to the southwest , Garissa County to the north, Somalia to the northeast, and the Indian Ocean to the southeast . There are over 65 islands on the mainland, which together make up the Lamu Archipelago. The total length of the coast is 130 km.
The countie consists of 2 constituencies, namely Lamu West and Lamu East. These two constituencies in turn consist of a total of 10 electoral districts.

population
The county has a diverse population made up of Swahilis , Arabs , Koreni , Boni , Ormas and migrant communities from the rest of the country. In 2012 the population was estimated at 112,252, including 58,641 men and 53,611 women. Due to the historically high influence of Arab culture on the coast of East Africa, Muslims form a majority of the population. Various infrastructure projects and better economic opportunities are attracting many migrants from other parts of the country, which overloads the county's social services.
In 2014 the fertility rate was 4.3 children per woman. In the same year the population had attended school for an average of 7 years.
economy
Fishing and tourism are the main industries for Lamu. The old town of Lamu has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013 . Mangrove exports, trade, traditional maritime activities, and traditional wood carving have created a stable economic base for the city's growth. Other economic activities include handicrafts such as making kofias (traditional embroidery hats) and agriculture. Through the LAPSSET project (Lamu Port Southern Sudan-Ethiopia Transport) the port of Lamu is to be expanded and connected to the countries of South Sudan and Ethiopia , which is hoped for an economic stimulus.
In 2017, the county's GDP per capita was 244,379 Kenyan Shillings (around 4,880 international dollars ), making it 6th among the 47 counties in the country.
