The Kenyan Shilling ( Swahili : Shilingi , Engl. : Kenyan Shilling ) is the currency of Kenya , which in 1964 the hitherto valid East African shilling replaced. One shilling is divided into 100 cents . The ISO code is KES .
Banknotes of 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 schillings are in circulation . Common coins are 1, 5, 10, 20 and (rarely) 40 shillings. The 40 shilling coin was issued in 2003 on the occasion of 40 years of independence from Great Britain . Older cent denominations are no longer in use due to their low value.
As a monetary policy program supported by the IMF or any other monetary policy program, the Kenyan shilling is subject to controlled floating without a specified exchange rate path.
The designation “Kenya pound” or “Bob” is also used for the 20 Kenya shilling coin.
