The Ouguiya or Ouguija ( Arabic أوقية, DMG Ūqīya , from Latin uncia , 'unit', 'one twelfth', 'ounce', and related to the Greek ούγκία ) is the currency of Mauritania . An Ouguiya is in 5  Khoums ( Arabic خمس Chumus , DMG Ḫumus  'fifth'; Abbreviation: KH ). This makes the Mauritanian currency, next to Madagascar , the only one in the world thatdeviatesfrom the decimal system .

The ouguiya has been the official currency in Mauritania since 1973, before that Mauritania was a member of the West African Monetary Union and the CFA franc was used . When the currency was changed, 5 CFA francs were exchanged for one Ouguiya.

Ouguiya until the end of 2017

The 1 ouguiya coin had disappeared because of its low value, the 5 ouguiya coin was rare. The coins of 10, 20 and 50 Ouguiya were often in use. The banknotes in circulation had values of 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 2000 Ouguiya. In 2010 a new 5000 Ouguiya note was introduced.

Currency reform

On December 5, 2017, the Banque Centrale de Mauritanie announced a new denomination (reduction of 10 units) of the Ouguiya at the turn of the year 2018. At the same time, a new series of banknotes made of polypropylene was issued and new coins were introduced. MRU / 929 were defined as the ISO codes of the new Ouguiya, the codes MRO / 478 designate the old Ouguiya.
