The Dalasi (plural: Dalasis ) has been the currency of the West African state of Gambia since July 1, 1971 .

history

The Dalasi was introduced as the new currency of the Gambia on July 1, 1971. With the introduction, a decimal currency was also used. Initially, banknotes of 1, 5, 10 and 25 Dalasi were issued.

In 1975 a 10 Dalasi coin was issued to commemorate 10 years of independence. In 1989, the range of banknotes was expanded to include a new 50 Dalasi banknote.

In September 1996, new 5, 10, 25 and 50 Dalasi banknotes were introduced. On July 20, 2001, the range of banknotes upwards was issued with a new 100-Dalasi banknote.

In July 2006 the banknotes were redesigned and equipped with modern security features such as holograms , which were presented to the public on July 27, 2006. The old banknotes were changed and are no longer valid.

The exchange rate of the dalasi to the euro reached a low of 40.21 dalasi for one euro on December 30, 2004. In 2013, the Dalasi experienced a strong devaluation compared to the US dollar (minus 14.8 percent) and the euro (minus 21 percent). This devaluation was higher than in previous years. In 2014 the Dalasi recovered. On January 30, 2015, the exchange rate to the euro was 48.94 Dalasi.

On February 25, 2015, the Central Bank of Gambia introduced a new series of banknotes, including the 200 Dalasi note, which replaced the D100 note as the largest denomination. All newly designed banknotes bore the portrait of then President Yahya Jammeh .

In May 2019, the Gambian Central Bank presented a series of newly designed banknotes. The notes were put into circulation from August 6, 2019. At the presentation, the Governor of the Gambian Central Bank said " The images of former President Yahya Jammeh and other features that have nothing to do with the country have been removed from the new banknotes. " The D25 was no longer issued, but one D20 note.

outlook

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), to which Gambia also belongs, plans to create a common currency for its 15 member states. The Eco was to be introduced as early as 2005, based on the euro as a model. So far, however, the introduction has been postponed indefinitely.
