The Congo Franc is the currency of the Democratic Republic of the Congo . It is not to be confused with the currency of the Republic of the Congo , the CFA franc , and its former temporary currency, also known as the “Congo franc”.
The banknote series, which has been in effect since 2005, has nominal values of 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 5000, 10,000 and 20,000 francs. Coins with the nominal values of 25 and 50 centimes, as well as 1, 5, 10 and 20 francs, the latter in silver and gold, were minted for collectors, but are not in circulation.
First franc, 1887–1967
The Belgian Congo already had its own coins and banknotes modeled on the Belgian franc during colonial times . The value of one Congo franc was 0.418422 grams of fine gold and was equivalent to the value of one Belgian franc. As a result of the Great Depression in the 1930s, the value of 0.0301264 grams of fine gold was reduced to one franc.
On November 4, 1908, the Belgian Congo was accepted into the Latin Monetary Union and subsequently issued coins in accordance with the Union's regulations. From 1916 the Congo Franc became a de facto currency in the Belgian-occupied areas of German East Africa , which from 1919 became the Mandate Rwanda-Urundi . From 1927 to 1952, the Banque du Congo Belge assumed the role of a central bank as an issuing bank, after which the Banque Centrale du Congo Belge et du Ruanda et du Urundi was responsible for issuing coins and banknotes until the Congo became independent .
After independence in 1960, the old currency designation was initially retained. In 1967 the franc was replaced by the zaïre at a ratio of 1,000: 1 .
Second franc, 1997 – today
Due to the high inflation, the Nouveau Zaïre was introduced in 1993; it replaced the old Zaïre in a ratio of 1: 3,000,000. When the name of the country changed back from Zaire to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1997 , the currency was also renamed again. The exchange was made at the rate of 100,000 Nouveaux Zaïres = 1 Franc.
- 1 Congo Franc (CDF) = 100,000 Nouveaux Zaïres (ZRN) = 3 · 10 11 Zaïres (ZRZ) = 3 · 10 14 Congo Francs (1887–1967)
