history

The Belgian franc was introduced in 1832. It was created on the model of the French franc and was linked to it in a 1: 1 ratio for a long time, as Belgium was also a member of the Latin Monetary Union .

From 1922 Luxembourg was in a monetary union with Belgium ( UEBL ). The Belgian franc was also the official currency unit in Luxembourg, as was the Luxembourg franc in Belgium. There was a fixed exchange rate of 1: 1.

In 1999 the Belgian franc was replaced by the euro at a ratio of 40.3399: 1 . Initially, the euro was only introduced as book money , and in 2002 also as cash .

Before the introduction of the euro, the following denominations were in circulation:

  • Coins: 50 centimes, 1, 5, 20, 50 francs
  • Banknotes: 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000, 10000 francs

On the 100-franc note of the Beyaert type (1978–1996) it was printed that counterfeiting is punishable by forced labor .
