The Belgian-Luxembourg Economic Union ( French Union économique belgo-luxembourgeoise , UEBL for short ) has existed since 1922. The relevant contract was signed by Belgium and Luxembourg on July 25, 1921 in Brussels and came into force on December 22, 1922 . The aim of the Union is economic cooperation between the two countries. Most of the content of the contract consists of common excises and the Belgian-Luxembourg currency association (until the introduction of the euro in 2002).

story

Although the population of Luxembourg in the referendum held on 28 September 1919 with a majority of over 60% for an economic connection to France had said, it came two years later to sign the contract for the U nion E conomique B ELGO L uxembourgeoise between Luxembourg and Belgium , as France opposed any economic connection with Luxembourg. The UEBL became a forerunner of the Benelux Economic Union .

According to the historian Charles Barthel, Luxembourg was forced to sign the contract, probably because of economic dependencies.

The contract was renewed in 1972, 1982, 1992, 2002 and 2012.
