The Belgian euro coins are in Belgium in circulation Euro coins of the common European currency Euro . On January 1, 1999, Belgium joined the euro zone , which made the introduction of the euro valid as the future currency.
Circulation coins
All coins are minted in the Belgian mint in Brussels.
First mint series (1999-2007)
All eight coins have the same motif: the portrait of King Albert II and his royal monogram . The design also includes the twelve stars of the EU and the year of issue. Like most of the euro countries, Belgium began minting its euro coins with the newly designed front as early as 2007 (new map of Europe). The design of the picture side comes from Jan Alfons Keustermans .

Second series of embossing (2008)
Belgium had already struck the newly designed common front (new map of Europe) on its coins in 2007. In 2008 Belgium began the reorganization of the euro coins suggested by the EU . The national side of the coins of the second minting series in 2008 differ from those of the first in the following details: The portrait of King Albert II has been updated and to the right of it is his monogram and the country code BE . The year is now below the portrait, together with the symbol of the Belgian mint in Brussels - Archangel Michael with a cross as a helmet - and a scale for the mint master Romain Coenen. Luc Luycx designed the second embossing series . Differences in the design can be seen on the cheekbones and the hair swirl next to the king's forehead.
Third series (2009-2013)
The portrait of King Albert II was changed again for the 2009–2013 coinage, and the design by Jan Alfons Keustermans was used again, as was the case with the first series of coins. According to the guidelines recommended by the Commission of the European Communities on December 19, 2008 for the national sides of euro coins in circulation, it is permitted to update coin designs depicting the head of state every fifteen years to reflect changes in the appearance of the head of state. According to the new guideline, however, the 2008 update came too early and therefore had to be revised. The other changes of the redesign from 2008 were retained.
Version 1999-2007 | Version 2008 | Version 2009-2013 |
The office of mint master was held by Serge Lesens from 2009 to 2012, so that the current coins from 2010 to 2012 have a feather as his mint master's mark. Starting in 2013, a cat will be minted on the coins for the incumbent mint master Bernard Gillard.
Fourth series of embossing (since 2014)
Since Albert II abdicated on July 21, 2013, his son Philippe has been King of the Belgians.

1 and 2 cent coins
On February 7, 2014, the Belgian cabinet approved a bill that provides for total amounts of 1, 2, 6 or 7 cents to be rounded down to a multiple of 5 cents, and to 3, 4, 8 or 9 cents. However, this measure will only come into force once a corresponding royal decree has been issued.
