The Luxembourg Euro coins are in Luxembourg in circulation Euro coins of the common European currency Euro . On January 1, 1999, Luxembourg joined the euro zone , which made the introduction of the euro valid as the future payment method.
Circulation coins
The Luxembourg euro coins have three different designs, all of which depict the portrait of Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg , designed by Yvette Gastauer-Claire . All coins also contain the twelve stars of the EU, the year of issue and the country name, LËTZEBUERG , in Luxembourgish . All Luxembourg coins must have the portrait of Grand Duke Henri. The Luxembourg coins of the joint issues of the 2 euro commemorative coins bear the portrait as an upside down image.
The Luxembourg euro coins were minted by the Dutch mint until 2004 , in 2005 and 2006 by the Finnish mint Suomen Rahapaja and the commemorative coins there and by the French mint , 2007 and 2008 in the French mint and again from 2009 by the Dutch mint . To this end, they bear the mint marks of the respective mint and the mint master (also the 1 and 2 euro coins, where the year is flanked by the mint mark, differing from the illustration below).
As in most of the euro countries, the Luxembourg euro coins have been minted with the newly designed front (new map of Europe) since 2007.
Since the beginning of 2018, in addition to the respective mint mark, a lion , the heraldic animal of Luxembourg , has been struck as the mint mark symbolizing the issuing country on all euro coins in circulation.

Consistent with the design guidelines
Most of the Luxembourg euro coins do not fully comply with the design guidelines of the European Commission from 2008. These set out recommendations for the design of the national sides of the circulation coins. Among other things, the European stars should be arranged like on the European flag - in particular, they should be evenly distributed in a circle. This is not the case with coins from 1 cent to 50 cents. The countries whose coins do not yet comply with the recommendations described above can make the necessary adjustments at any time; they must do this by June 20, 2062 at the latest.
