history

After the first city submitted an offer to the BIE, other cities had six months to respond. At the beginning of 2011, Izmir (Turkey) and Ayutthaya ( Thailand ) submitted offers to the BIE and initiated the six-month time window for other cities. When the window closed on Nov. 2, 2011, there were five potential cities, with Dubai only making its entry at the last minute. Ayutthaya's bid was later disqualified by the Bureau of International Expositions over concerns that it was not receiving adequate support from the Thai government. The BIE announced the choice of the host city for November 27, 2013. The following four cities were still available:

São Paulo was excluded from the competition after the first round of voting. Izmir was rejected in the second ballot. Yekaterinburg finally lost to Dubai in the third and final round of voting. The election took place in Paris . In Dubai, the election was celebrated with fireworks , a national holiday was declared for all educational institutions in the country the following day. The Emir of Dubai Muhammad bin Raschid Al Maktum announced an event that would "marvel the world".
