International Horticultural Exhibition 1973
The 1973 International Horticultural Exhibition (IGA) was also a federal horticultural show . It took place from April 27 to October 7, 1973 in Hamburg .
prehistory
The 1973 International Horticultural Exhibition followed two other international horticultural exhibitions , the Hamburg International Horticultural Exhibition in 1953 and the 1963 International Horticultural Exhibition . Due to the structural development that had meanwhile taken place on the edge of the historic park, the exhibition area had to be re-cut. The following were planned as exhibition grounds:
- Planten un Blomen ,
- the old botanical garden ,
- the small ramparts ,
- the Sievekingplatz ,
- the great ramparts and
- the old Elbpark
That was a total of 76 hectares .
The horticultural exhibition
The planning was in the hands of a team of ten. The Marseilles road, previously Planten un Blomen and the Old Botanical Garden had separated, has been lowered and covered in a section of a concrete slab, landscaped with cotoneaster (Cotoneaster) and potted plants designed, now both parks joined together. Planten un Blomen received a water playground and a new water-light organ in the park lake. It replaced a predecessor that had been installed there for the 1953 International Horticultural Exhibition .
In the ramparts of the emphasis was placed on leisure activities: A 1,800 m 2 large ice and roller skating rink , facilities for table tennis and bowls created and a jogging trail was - the Zeitgeist installed - accordingly.
The international contributions came from Great Britain , Sweden and Italy .
graduation
5.9 million visitors were counted. That was less than hoped. After the end of the International Horticultural Exhibition in 1973 , the entire park became freely accessible (for Planten un Blomen , admission was previously charged). The dining facilities were retained. Due to the dismantling of part of the fixtures built for the International Horticultural Exhibition in 1973 and a modernization of the parks in 1986, only limited structural evidence of the horticultural exhibition has survived.
